Powerful, fast, effective, simple – a few words used to describe the wonderful effects of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). EFT is a relatively new technique that belongs to the new field of Energy Psychology. Often referred to as acupuncture without the needles, EFT is a safe, reliable, side effect free approach to wellbeing that can be easily learnt and even self administered for simple issues.
How does EFT work?
It has been argued that the cause of negative emotion is a disruption in the body’s energy system. When we become hurt or troubled these feelings change the energy flow within our body. The changes can cause blockages and disruption leading to changes and mutations in the structure of our cells. We can carry these blockages for years, adding to them along the way.
EFT or Tapping works by releasing blockages in the energy system of the body. These blockages can manifest in a variety of ways ranging from pain, stiffness and disease in the physical field to limiting beliefs and behaviours in our emotional field.
The release of blockages is achieved by tapping lightly on specific meridian points in the body while focusing and verbalising on the presenting issue. For example if you are feeling stressed your words would be something like “Even though I am feeling so stressed today I love and accept myself”. This would be said out loud while tapping on the body.
What can EFT help with?
EFT has been successfully used in the treatment of trauma and abuse, negative behavioural patterns, issues of anxiety and depression, anger, addiction, and chronic pain. It has been used effectively in the areas of weight-loss, phobias such as fears of flying, spiders, enclosed spaces, and blockages in career and finances. The key to success is identifying the root cause event that leads to subsequent reactive emotional responses triggered by new events
- EFT is proactive and drug free
- It can, and usually does, provide rapid and lasting relief from symptoms
- For simple issues EFT can be self administered
- Its easy to learn, safe and effective
- Can be used on adults, children and even animals
An EFT story
*This account is being retold with the permission of the Client.
Last year an 83-year-old gentleman who was suffering from bilateral rotator cuff tears approached me for assistance. He was in terrible pain and his movement was restricted to the extent that he couldn’t participate in normal day-to-day activities. In fact, he was even unable to pull on his own trousers in the morning, relying on his wife to assist him to dress each day. As a proud, traditional man he found this both depressing and humiliating.
The client told me that he was unable to move his arms more than 15 degrees from his body without experiencing excruciating pain. His sleep patterns were becoming irregular due to the disruptive pain throughout the evening. He was at his wits end and to make matters worse anecdotal evidence provided by well meaning friends was “It’ll take at least 6 -12 months to get better, you just have to put up with the pain. I know its happened to me”. But, what they didn’t know was EFT.
After tapping with my client for 15 minutes on the injury, the pain and associated issues, my client was comfortable and raising his arms above his head. I was truly in awe of the result, and I recount this session to you because of the extraordinary outcome. I had to remind him that even though he was free of the pain that the physical damage was going to require a longer healing time and that he must be respectful of his body and its healing process. In short no dancing just yet please!
We continued to work together each day via the telephone for a week and then every second day for a week and then once a week for a fortnight. He continued to tap by himself in between sessions and was amazed at his rapid improvement. Within six weeks he was close to healed. He dealt with many issues throughout this period particularly with anger and burdens that he had chosen to hold onto from his growing up years.
He had a complete recovery and is back mowing lawns, painting, playing golf and fishing, all the things that he loves to do.
